While Silicon Valley has long been a magnet for tech talent, the idea that it’s a necessary destination for growth and success for Canadian tech firms has largely been debunked.
Building technology companies in Canada while achieving global success isn’t just possible; it’s something Canada is positioned to do exceptionally well.
At a recent panel at Web Summit in Vancouver, I had the privilege of highlighting why Canada stands out as an extraordinary place for building borderless businesses.
Building with a global mindset
Canadian businesses have an improved shot at international success because they must think globally from the start. With a smaller domestic market, companies strategize for international audiences from the outset, designing products and solutions that resonate worldwide.
As perhaps our strongest example, Shopify’s resourceful and adaptable culture helped it scale to a worldwide e-commerce giant while proudly staying rooted in Canada. Look also to Clio, Databricks, and StackAdapt. This global mindset is baked in Canadian business DNA, offering a serious competitive edge.
Canada’s diversity is its superpower
One of Canada’s greatest strengths is its diversity. Research shows that diverse teams are more profitable and more likely to introduce new product innovations. With its multicultural population, Canada offers businesses a wealth of perspectives that reflect the diverse markets they aim to serve.
Canada is also home to world-class talent. Institutions like the University of Victoria remain one of the richest sources of innovative minds. Co-op programs help lean and growing organizations bridge the talent gap by bringing in fresh, high-calibre talent and giving students practical experience for the future.
Crucially, retaining talent is as important as attracting it. When I was at Google Canada and trying to combat brain drain, one thing stood out to me: the incredible scale of impact here. Compare leading a sales territory for all of Canada to managing one region within a single U.S. state — the responsibility is often far greater here, offering employees more significant work and influence.
About 89% of Gen Zs and 92% of millennials say purpose is key to job satisfaction and well-being. Factors like a higher quality of life and meaningful work are now crucial for retaining top talent, giving smaller, mission-driven businesses an edge.
Globally minded Canadian customers
Canada is home to globally-minded customers. Often, our large-enterprise customers are local offices of international giants like Amazon and Intuit. What sets these businesses apart is their value to their parent companies often extends beyond revenue generation. Instead, they prioritize innovation, making Canada a testing ground for strategies to export to other markets. International markets also have mirror organizations and programs that are equally incentivized to work with us.
Businesses that build strong relationships with international partners focused on refining and shipping innovative opportunities will have accelerated access to global markets. By leveraging their expertise, Canadian businesses can tap into global markets, unlocking significant growth potential.
Leaning into resources
Canada provides robust support systems for businesses aiming to expand internationally. Recently, a group of tech entrepreneurs and business leaders launched Build Canada, a platform committed to driving Canada's growth. Other initiatives and networks like IRAP, SR&ED, the C100, and the Trade Commissioner Service are invaluable resources in building bridges to new markets.
The Canadian diaspora around the world is another valuable, yet often underutilized, resource. Canadian Consulates are staffed with experts who help Canadian companies enter new markets and build connections. Perhaps the most powerful secret weapon for Canadian firms seeking global growth, expat Canadians are often deeply connected to their roots and naturally inclined to offer support — whether through introductions, guidance, or facilitating new opportunities.
The path forward
Canadian businesses are uniquely positioned to lead on the global stage, fueled by unparalleled diversity, innovative talent, and a natural global mindset.
By leveraging our strengths and thinking boldly, we can — and will — succeed globally from right here at home.
