Ocean Networks Canada celebrates a year of progress

Last week, Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) released its annual report, highlighting science and tech advancements from Spring 2023 to 2024.

Perhaps most notable is the organization’s expedition to Antarctica, which marks the first time in 18 years that ONC has monitored oceans beyond Canada.

Thanks to a partnership with the Spanish National Research Council, ONC is now operating a subsea observatory at the Spanish Antarctic Station, providing year-round, near real-time data on ocean conditions there.

“ONC’s expertise in designing and successfully operating underwater observatories able to withstand harsh polar conditions will contribute to Spain’s scientific expertise in monitoring Antarctica, a continent that is critical to this planet’s climate system, and is undergoing rapid, consequential changes that we need to understand,” said Kate Moran, president and CEO of Ocean Networks Canada, when the expedition was announced.

Other highlights from ONC’s annual report include:

  • The deployment of seven Argo floats to monitor dissolved oxygen, temperature, seawater salinity, and pressure.

  • Three expeditions to conduct maintenance on ONC’s observatories on the floor of the Pacific Ocean.

  • Progress with ONC’s Earthquake Information Messaging System, designed to give operators of critical infrastructure systems early warning.

ONC has already had a busy start to the fall, with research into ocean deoxygenation, a visit from a federal minister, and some surprising dinner guests.
