Late last week, the Council of the Haida Nation, Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, Pacheedaht First Nation, Quatsino First Nation and the Government of Canada announced the designation of Tang.ɢwan — ḥačxwiqak — Tsig̱is as a Marine Protected Area (MPA).

Located approximately 150 kilometres off the west coast of Vancouver Island and covering 133,017 square kilometres, the area is now Canada’s largest MPA designated under the Oceans Act.

The area also incorporates the former Endeavour Hydrothermal Vents MPA where Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) has been providing ocean monitoring through its deep-sea cabled NEPTUNE observatory since 2009. Two other monitoring sites part of NEPTUNE—Cascadia Basin and Middle Valley—are now also within the ThT MPA boundaries.

“Ocean Networks Canada has been delighted to work together with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, British Columbia coastal First Nations and other partners to explore and uncover the rich and biodiverse ocean offshore our west coast,” said ONC president and CEO Kate Moran. “This work helped set the stage for delineating Canada’s newest protected area — Tang.ɢwan — ḥačxʷiqak — Tsig̱is — which is a key part of ensuring that future generations will inherit a healthy ocean and thriving coastal communities."
