Island firms AOT and Redlen each take home a coveted Technology Impact Award

Technology Impact Awards winners on October 6

Last week, the BC Tech Association (BC Tech) announced the winners for its 2022 Technology Impact Awards (TIAs). Co-hosted by Jill Tipping, CEO of the BC Tech Association, and author and speaker Riaz Meghji, the event welcomed more than 800 people and celebrated a record number of finalists alongside its 12 winners.

Among those who took home hardware were Victoria’s AOT Technologies and Saanichton’s Redlen Technologies.

AOT took home the Company of Year - Growth award. According to BC Tech, AOT’s “low-code approach has made it one of the fastest-growing and most innovative application developers in Canada. What started with two founders and a $15,000 youth loan from Futurpreneur Canada has led to a decade of growth that now sees AOT employ around 60 people in B.C. and 120 worldwide.”

AOT’s annual revenue has increased since its founding in 2011, reaching $1 million in 2015 and more than $7 million in 2021.

Redlen won the Company of the Year - Scale award, signalling its transition to a role model for emerging tech companies and a future anchor firm. Founded in 1999, Redlen develops sensors that are driving innovations in computed tomography cameras (CT scanners), improving diagnostic capabilities and reducing the amount of radiation a patient is exposed to.

Why they won, per BC Tech: “In a huge win for B.C.’s tech industry, Redlen’s technical leadership and innovation prompted medical equipment multinational Canon Inc. to acquire the Saanichton-based company for $430 million in October of 2021.” The business is now engaged with and funded by six of the seven top CT-scan equipment manufacturers in the world and has more than 24 patents to its name, among other accolades.
