Vancouver Island to benefit from pre-election investments

With elections looming on the horizon, the Government of Canada and Province of B.C., alongside local partners, announced an influx of funding for clean economy infrastructure projects.

The $89 million investment is intended to support projects focused on energy-efficient buildings, clean energy, and improving access to clean transportation options.

Of the 17 projects funded, four will benefit Vancouver Island communities:

  • Regional District of Powell River: Construction of a multi-use pathway to connect neighborhoods and enhance access to the community recreation center and secondary school, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by promoting active transportation.

  • Regional District of Nanaimo: Installation of heat pumps to recover heat from the refrigeration plant, upgrade air-handling and dehumidification systems, and remove existing gas-fired radiant heating.

  • City of Nanaimo: Installation of a heat-recovery chiller, replace air-handling units with hydronic cooling coils, and add an air-source heat pump.

  • Kwakiutl First Nation: Upgrades to the building envelope, HVAC equipment, and lighting, and install solar photovoltaics at six on-reserve community buildings

More than $29 million of the investment will be delivered through the federal government’s Canada Infrastructure Program. The province’s CleanBC Communities Fund will add $30 million, and local partners have contributed a combined $29.9 million and are responsible for any remaining costs.
